YWCA Moncton Supports the Coalition for Gun Control Trigger Change Campaign

22 November 2018
In solidarity with YWCA Toronto and the greater YWCA Movement, YWCA Moncton is supporting the Coalition for Gun Control Trigger Change Campaign: https://triggerchange.ca/. As the federal government is currently examining a ban on personal handguns and assault weapons, it is imperative we use our voices as ammunition and speak out about the connection between gun-violence and gender-based violence.
As we approach December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we call on our supporters, volunteers, staff, partner agencies, and Members of Parliament to take the following concerns seriously and leverage this opportunity to create safer communities for all:
  • Access to firearms by an intimate partner increases the likelihood of femicide.
  • Banning assault weapons and handguns does not affect the legal use of firearms for hunting (but it does recognize that hunters do not need semi-automatic weapons).
  • The constitution guarantees the hunting rights of Indigenous peoples.
  • Women face disproportionate risks from guns that are too often used to threaten, control and kill.
  • Indigenous women, racialized women, trans women, older women, newcomer women and women living with disabilities are at increased risk of experiencing violence because of systemic barriers.
  • In 2016, there were 25 victims of firearm-related violent crime for every 100,000 Canadians (7100 total). One is too many. This number has been on the rise since 2013. (Stats Canada)
